Books, Balls, & Blocks was developed by Help Me Grow Utah. It is a state-wide*, free, and interactive parent event that allows the community a fun and entertaining venue to provide information about child development, developmental screenings (Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3)), and community resources. Books, Balls, & Blocks includes activity stations revolving around books (emergent literacy), balls (gross and fine motor and problem-solving skills) and blocks (emergent math and fine motor skills). The beauty of Books, Balls, & Blocks is the flexibility it provides to meet the needs of the community and the size of the venue. The event can include one activity station or a variety of activity stations.
On the surface, children are just playing, but in reality, this play encourages learning. Parents are encouraged to participate with their child/ren. Many parents appreciate the simplicity of this activity and can visualize how to recreate these learning stations at home using everyday items and toys such as books, balls, and blocks. The event focuses on child-led play. We encourage families to follow the lead of their child, even if the child stays in one place the whole time or if the child is bouncing back and forth from one activity to another.
Books, Balls, & Blocks introduces families to early childhood partners in their community. These include but are not limited to their Child Care Resource & Referral agency, county central intake, evidence-based home visiting programs, Head Start/Early Head Start, Family Success Centers, early intervention and more.
